Titled “Dojoji: The Man Inside the Bell,” the world premier, written by
Ernest Abuba and directed by respected Tisa Chang, in collaboration with
and choreographed by Sachiyo Ito will play at the Clurman Theater on
42nd Street in New York City. Ms. Ito will dance as the Spirit of the
heroine of the legendary Japanese story.
I am pleased to announce a new production by the venerable and pioneering Pan Asian Repertory Theater next month of the most famous legend in the performing arts of Japan, Dojoji. Titled “Man Inside the Bell”, this world premier, written by Ernest Abuba and directed by the highly respected Tisa Chang, will play at the Clurman Theater on 42nd Street in New York City.
I have been fortunate to work with Ms. Chang since the early 1980s and I am pleased to be collaborating with her again as well as with Mr. Abuba, the great writer/ artist/ director and their talented artists on this production.
Dojoji speaks of the timeless themes from ancient Japan, of the frailties of the human condition which still plague the human spirit of the contemporary world.
Over the years, I have done many productions of Dojoji such as the Kabuki dance, Kyoganoko Musume Dojoji, and my own contemporary versions. I was thrilled to learn that my Dojoji 2002 became the source of inspiration for this new play. The Dojoji legend has been so inspirational and popular that a new genre known as “Dojoji-mono” has developed in Japanese performing arts.
Dojoji is a story of love and transformation – the transformation of beauty by desire and attachment which turn beauty into hideous ugliness, leading to eventual destruction. Surrounding the bell of Dojoji Temple, a beautiful women’s desire turns her into a monstrous being, driven by jealousy and desire. Well . . . , rather than tell you what happens next, I invite you to enjoy this drama with me. Come and be transported beyond time and space, beyond the enduring human condition through dance and visual excitement!
