Dance and poetry share common practice that relies on observation, attentiveness, and awareness in the moment. To help these skills, a walking meditation will begin each session to reach a stillness and awareness of self. Each session will end with a theme for a homework assignment to compose a short poem. Also, participants have a chance to share dance and poetry as a public component.

The goal is to enjoy sharing dance and poetry of Japan as well as learning about the Japanese culture, and to create a communal art of dance and poetry inspired by the Japanese tradition.

The artist is a participant in SU-CASA program, supported by the public funds from New York City council. Recipient of Foreign Ministers Award, Sachiyo Ito founded and leads the only dance school and professional performing company in New York City that specializes both in Japanese classical dance as well as contemporary works based on traditional aesthetics and styles. The company received the City’s proclamations for its founding at the 30th anniversary in 2011. For the last 50 years Ito has introduced Japanese culture in United States, educating, inspiring and entertaining through the grace and beauty of Japanese dance.
